Deere & Company began when John Deere, born in Rutland, Vermont, USA on February 7, 1804, moved to Grand Detour, Illinois in 1836 to escape bankruptcy in Vermont. Already an established blacksmith, Deere opened a 1,378-square-foot (128 m2) shop in Grand Detour in 1837, which allowed him to serve as a general repairman in the village, as well as a manufacturer of small tools such as pitchforks and shovels. Small tools production was just a start; the item that set him apart was the self-scouring steel plow, which was pioneered in 1837 when John Deere fashioned a Scottish steel saw blade into a plow. Prior to Deere’s steel plow, most farmers used iron or wooden plows to which the rich Midwestern soil stuck, so had to be cleaned frequently. The smooth-sided steel plow solved this problem, and greatly aided migration into the American Great Plains in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In September 2017, Deere & Company signed a definitive agreement to acquire Blue River Technology, which is based in Sunnyvale, California and is a leader in applying machine learning to agriculture. Blue River has designed and integrated computer vision and machine learning technology that will enable growers to reduce the use of herbicides by spraying only where weeds are present, optimizing the use of inputs in farming.
The National Tractor Pulling Legends Series (NTPL), based out of Northwest Ohio, was founded 6 years ago by Mike who wanted to create a series that was governed and organized with a set of rules that preserves and protects tractors built before 1980. The National Pulling Legends Series chose 1980 as the cutoff date for the vintage modified tractors because that was a pivotal year of changes in the industry, where tractors were starting to be built on a larger scale with production “cookie-cutter” style designs and racing chassis of modern-day pulling.

The tractor the farmer was operating was purchased new in the spring of 1995. It had four-wheel drive with spring-engaged hydraulic brakes on the front wheels also, 66 hp, an open driver station with roll-over protective structure (ROPS), and was equipped with a front-end loader. The farmer was familiar with this tractor and all aspects of its operation, having used the tractor daily since it was purchased.
Of course, taking back the stuff that we own won’t be easy. Corporations have better lobbyists than the rest of us. And, somehow, the notion of actually owning the things you buy has become revolutionary.

John Deere is a company, by the way, that is seriously serious about preventing people from copying their stuff. So serious, in fact, that they even locked the PDF they sent to the Copyright Office. No modifying the document. And no copying passages. Really, John Deere? How am I supposed to highlight all that’s wrong in this document now? Screenshot by Kyle Wiens
Discussion: The farmer is convinced that the brakes malfunctioned on his tractor. He reported receiving calls from other farmers regarding similar problems using this type of tractor. It is not in the scope of the FACE program to test and determine whether the malfunction took place or whether it is typical for this tractor model. There may be a possibility of varying hydraulic oil levels when using a tractor on an incline, and this may affect performance of the tractor hydraulics and the brakes. Further testing would be needed to prove or exclude this possibility.

The Dain All-Wheel Drive was the first tractor produced by John Deere. In 1911, Deere purchased the Dain Manufacturing Company of Ottumwa, Iowa. The next year, Deere decided to design its own tractor, and Dain founder Joseph Dain Sr., was directed to design that tractor. After several prototypes, the design was finalized in 1917, and 100 production units were ordered. By 1919 when that production run was complete, Deere had purchased the Waterloo Boy company. Although the Dain AWD was ahead of its time, with features such as a shift-on-the-fly transmission, Deere halted production in late 1919, partly because the cost of the Dain tractor was double that of the Waterloo Boy, and partly because of the death of Dain Sr.
